Emo’s are a watered down version of Goth. They may still wear eyeliner, and studded accesories, but hella lot less. Goths like to listen to really death metal and ‘gothic(duh)’ music, whereas Emos can vary from Alternative, Pop-punk to Screamo. Yeeeep.
Oh a definition I heard that was funny.
‘The difference between Goths and Emos- Goths want to kill everyone. emos only want to kill themselves.’

Well emo started as a form of music, mainly in the washington dc area. It was highly influenced by punk. Now that is has grown, it has turned into a style and fashion more so than actual music. Of course, emo is short for emotional and the songs derive from being sad and talking about your ‘feelings’ The style of emo is the scene style haircut, tight pants, and the over use of eye liner or mascara. Goth is just a darker version of emo. It follows the same pattern of sadness and depression and the style is much more morbid, with the use of black clothing, black hair, black make up and random accessories. References : My mind…
They’re very different both musically and “culturally” though I would say it seems that emo has taken away the limelight as the popular angsty teen genre; something that goth count culture had in the bag through the 90s.
Emo originated as a version of hardcore punk in the early 80s, earning it’s name from the emotional style of screaming and expressions of the frontmen of the time. Over the years it slowly evolved, and remained under the radar until the term started gaining more and more popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s. One common misconception that had always bothered me, was the use of the term for all sorts of music that were totally disconected from the real genre and one another; their only common bond being “emotional” based song righting. Punk bands such as Alkaline Trio and various singer songwriters (Dashboard Confessional and Bright Eyes being prime examples) were both categorized in this manner, despite the fact that their work itself had no connection to emo musically. (And even in looking at the bands themselves, there seems to be no cultural or fashion connections either.)
The “emo” that exists now which most purely traces it’s roots to the orginal version of the music is post-hardcore/screamo. (The debate about the differences of those are another topic altogether.) Bands such as The Used, Thursday, Underoath, etc etc.
While I can’t give as comprehensive of a history of goth music of the top of my head, I can say that in the music the two differ greatly. Most goth music I’ve heard would fall under or at least in a similar stride with Industrial music. There’s far more electronic influence and a much darker tone rather than the pure aggression of a lot of screamo.
Fashion wise, the two do share a few common things, an affinity for the color black and longer and sometimes carefully constructed hairstylings. But beyond that a keen observer would note a lot of difference in choice of brands and accessories. In my experience those involved in the gothic subculture tend to have much more intricacies to their manner of dressing, and often times have a dark and contemporary twist on classic styles from years past. This leads to a variety of clothing styles within “goth” but all which undeniably represent the culture.
Emo style on the other hand seems to consist of several variations of the same haircut, generally involving the infamous “swoop” bangs. The clothes are usually tight fitting, to the degree that often males wear female sizes.
I’m rambling here, but you get the idea. References : Been around various scenes over a large amount of years.
I’m not a member of either sub-culture so if I’ve made any mistakes that bother anyone, my apologies.
Just to add t the points above Goth emerged and formed from punk back in the late seventies/ early eighties, a little longer than ten years ago! References : sad ex goth, was always a happy soul, but still have the black thing going on….
There is no EMO or GOTH music!
There are bands that dress to fit the style.
I suppose Goth would be Korn, Slipknot, etc.
But that doesnt make the genre goth.
Emo…..they really don’t either. I suppose they can relate to Hawthorne Heights, The Used, Aiden, etc. References :
I’m going to skip the culture thing, since everyone pretty much said it all. Those types of people are just sheep, following the masses. As for the music, well, I’ll toss out some examples since very few others did.
The early emo bands were bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Rites of Spring, etc. Here’s a link to a song I like. The music is alternative rock. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inEmVRcTELw
The newer emo bands are usually these pop punk bands that say they aren’t emo, but dress and act the part anyway. I don’t like or have much respect for them. See: Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, etc.
As for gothic music, eh. Every band that has the slightest “dark” influence is labelled as goth. Some of the well-known gothic rock bands are the Bauhaus, The Cure, and Siouxsie & the Banshees.
Gothic metal is pretty self-explanatory. There’s a LOT of crap out there, but some of the good bands are Elis, Lacuna Coil, and Sentenced (three different goth sounds).
A lot of times, though, gothic is just an adjective. There’s gothic industrial music, like Ayria or Zombie Girl. There’s gothic classically-influenced music, like Dark Sanctuary. It all depends.
Both “emo” music and gothic music can be amazing - but there is a TON of crap that you have to sift through to find it. And for anyone who claims to be goth or emo, grow up. Listen to the music and enjoy it, but don’t conform to those lame stereotypes by wearing all black and only acting a certain way. That’s dumb. References :

The real question is, how are they in any way similar?
As a previous person answered goth is the romanticization of death, darkness, blood, etc.
EMO is a bunch of anorexic, suicidal cry babies.
Oh and I’m not goth. I do know a good few. And I’m talking about true goths, not glamour goths.
