Using Estarse, the Reflexive Form of Estar

Sometimes the reflexive form of a verb has a somewhat different meaning than the regular form of the verb. Our newest lesson, one on estarse, shows how the meaning of estar, which typically means “to be,” typically changes to “to stay” in the reflexive form.

Men’s Fashion at the Oscars

Guys have it easy: They can just wear a tux. And apparently - this year - a skinny tie.

What Works Best for You in Learning Spanish?

It’s one thing to struggle through grammar lessons or to have a halting conversation in Spanish, but still another to reach the point where you begin thinking in Spanish, even if only momentarily. How is that done? Part of the answer, of course, is practice. But another part is to find the way of learning Spanish that works best for you, which likely is different than what works best for me.

In today’s featured Readers Respond feature, we’d like to know what has worked best for you to help you learn Spanish, in the hopes that someone else will find that useful. But before you do that, please read one or all of these sections of our featured lesson:

We welcome your comments!

Best Hair at the Oscars

I don’t have nearly enough (read: any) red carpet events in my life, so I think I’ll just start wearing formal hairstyles all the time. They look great, and I’m sure my coworkers will get used to see me in jeans, a t-shirt, and an updo with sparkly pins.

New York-area members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrated the 82nd Academy Awards® at GILT at The New York Palace hotel. Since 1990, the Academy has hosted a New York Oscar celebration for its East Coast members, many of whom are previous Academy Award® winners and nominees. New York’s Oscar party was open to all Academy members who reside on the East Coast or who were visiting New York City at that time. The evening’s festivities began with a reception in the GILT Bar, renowned for its selection of signature cocktails. Following the reception, the invited guests adjourned to the restaurant for a multi-course Oscar-themed dinner and live viewing of the 82nd Academy Awards telecast. Executive Chef Justin Bogle and Executive Pastry Chef David Carmichael created a special menu for the occasion. GILT opened in 2006 and has since earned international acclaim. In 2009 the restaurant received two Michelin stars under Executive Chef Bogle, who at 28 was the youngest New York City chef to ever earn this distinction. Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 was presented at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network in more than 200 countries worldwide.
